Screaming success

ripoffs 2016Here is a photo of the RipOff artists with their creations just after the bell rang on Saturday signalling the end of this year’s challenge.

Although the iconic painting, “The Scream” by Edvard Munch is considered a depressing picture, the RipOffs did their best to liven it up.   Each of the nine artists added an element from the previous nine years challenges: perhaps a dancing girl from Toulouse Lautrec, a cypress by Vincent van Gogh, or a tulip by Geoorgia O’Keeffe. In addition, the current challenge was to add an anachronism – often a reason for the “scream”. For example, a number of artists chose some form of industrialization or climate change in the background as their anachronism. Guest artist, Bethany Handfield with her encaustic talent was a delightful addition.

To celebrate the group’s 10th anniversary, a grand opening reception was held in “big blue”.  Guests were surrounded by previous year’s RipOff challenge pieces.  Shown together the impressive display gave kudos to the merits of the RipOff’s artistic achievements.

The artists wish to thank the Oliver Community Arts Council  for their support in mounting this year’s special anniversary challenge.

Who knows what the group will conjure up for next year.  Perhaps something acknowledging Canada’s 150th birthday….any suggestions?

FASS looking FAbulouSS

The Fall Art Show and Sale (FASS) is only two weeks away, and it’s shaping up to be something fahbulous darling! Be sure to catch all the excitement on Saturday October 1 and Sunday October 2 at the Oliver Community Centre. The theme this year is “Outside the Box”. Scroll down to see more articles about the event. Here are some NEW updates:

Arts council members get first peek at the **NEW** wine charms (at left) on sale  beginning Monday September 26 at the Arts Jam. Come out to the Quail’s Nest Arts Centre on Monday at 9:30 to buy your favourite  or collect all five! These cute little laminated charms commemorate the last four FASS posters, and cost only $2 each. They are great for identifying your wine glass and those of your guests.  Buy them now and “wear” them to the Festival of the Grape. (Come to think of it, they’d look pretty funky as earrings….) Also available all weekend at the FASS.

Just announced: the live entertainment for Saturday’s reception (7 – 9 p.m.) is… Jazz Out West. Not to be missed!  Drop in at the art show from 3 p.m. – on to view the artwork, cast your vote for favourites in each category, and bid at the silent auction. Come back for the reception and schmooze with a great bunch of people. Wait for the announcement of the winners just before the 9 p.m.  close.

On Sunday, the creativity continues: the show, sale, and silent auction go on AND there is the added bonus of a featured artist, Terry Irvine on site spinning and felting. Terry has a quirky humourous style, and she will love to demonstrate her craft and tell you all about it. Terry is also a member of the group featured as the non-competitive display …

The RipOff Artists will present their twisted take on “American Gothic” by Grant Wood. Come tour the display by this multimedia collective of artists. Not only do they “rip off” a great work of art and adapt it to their own medium, this year they also reimagine this iconic painting in the style of a different artist. Can’t imagine what that looks like. You gotta see it for yourself. You will not be disappointed. These folks are jaw-dropping good!  On display all weekend long.

So, that’s

Saturday October 1:
3 – 9 p.m.: Art Show and Sale, Silent Auction, and Displays
3 – 8 p.m. : Public Voting
7 – 0 p.m. : Reception with Jazz Out West
FREE admission

Sunday October 2:
12 – 5 p.m. : art show, sale, silent auction, and displays

Shhh! Artists busy at work… How about YOU?

We know there are many artists out there already working on their submissions to the Fall Art Show and Sale. How about YOU? There’s still time to send in your entry form! The deadline for the form is September 9, 2011.

The theme is “Outside the Box”, and can be interpreted literally or figuratively. There may be an actual box somewhere in your creation, or perhaps the “box” is more of a metaphorical construct. Maybe what you create reflects how you are thinking outside the normal parameters, or outside your usual medium or perspective. The theme is meant to celebrate what is quirky, inventive, freed from constraint, or just plain different! What’s outside YOUR box?

For an entry form, visit Lauralee’s Treasure Cellar on Main Street or the Oliver Visitor Centre. Email OliverCAC @gmail.com to ask for a copy emailed to you or simply download the form here by clicking on the link. 2011 FASS Entry Form Print out on one sheet of 8x 11 using both sides of the page, and fold in half.

It’s also under “Forms” at the top of this screen.

The Fall Art Show and Sale is the arts council’s largest event of the year, visited by hundreds of locals and tourists. Don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your artwork!

“Untangled”: encaustic paintings by Thea Haubrich and Bethany Handfield
Leir House, 220 Manor Park Ave., Penticton
September 8 – October 6, 2011
Opening event: Thursday, September 8, 2011, 7 – 9 PM

On display at Leir House, Penticton from September 8 – October 6, 2011, is the work of Thea Haubrich and Bethany Handfield. Though a generation apart, the two artists share a love for colour and texture.

Featured is a selection of their works in encaustic, a medium that involves painting with melted beeswax to which coloured pigments have been added. The versatility of the medium untangles the imagination of artist and viewer alike, to freely enjoy the often unexpected changes during the painting process.

Thea Haubrich has been working in encaustic for almost 15 years. She is a sought-after instructor and a proud “RipOff artist” (www.ripoffartists.ca). Echoing the colour and light of the Okanagan, her paintings are vibrant, full of texture and sometimes hidden messages. One of her greatest passions is networking and connecting people, which she realizes through her Ning social network, blogging and writing monthly newsletters. Through her workshops Thea has another opportunity to share her love for encaustic and bring people together.

An Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, she has participated in numerous juried and non-juried art shows, winning several awards and honorable mentions. Her paintings are in collections around Canada, the USA and Europe.

Also on display is a selection of her Zentangle drawings, which she created as she was undergoing chemotherapy, and some portrait drawings. The drawings have been dipped in beeswax, giving them a wonderful translucent quality. Some drawings are for sale as postcards, with proceeds going towards the BC Cancer Foundation.

Bethany Handfield is an encaustic and mixed media collage artist who resides in Kaleden.

She is inspired by exterior and interior landscapes and views painting as a form of inquiry and meditation. She worked for many years in the Vancouver film industry as a television and film editor.

Her encaustic instruction is ongoing with the amazing artist, teacher, and friend Thea Haubrich. She has been fortunate to also study encaustic with the innovative Anna Maria Aigner of Austria and the talented Linda Womack of Portland, Oregon.

Bethany is the acting Secretary for the Federation of Canadian Artists, South Okanagan Similkameen Chapter and has been in numerous shows locally. She will be exhibiting at “Encaustic Masters: Inspirational Visual Voices” in Troutdale, Oregon in late September. Her paintings can be found in collections in Canada, Spain & Australia.

No time to be Silent!

The Fall Art Show and Sale committee is looking for volunteers, businesses, and arts groups to supply seven more theme boxes for the silent auction. To date, the committee has received pledges for 43 of the 50 boxes they are hoping for.  Seven more are needed by September 6.

The silent auction reflects the theme of the art show: “Outside the Box”. Visitors to the two-day event can bid for boxes of goodies. Each box contains related items : gardening, teatime, bath and beauty, crafts, automotive, travel, office supplies, and so on. Many volunteers, delighted with the idea, have offered to fill a box. The committee just needs seven more. The proceeds from the boxes help to offset the high costs for mounting the Fall Art Show and Sale, helping to keep the event in the black.

Don’t want to fill a whole box?  Arts council member Val Friesen is inviting others to help him fill his “home preserves” box. Val is a great gardener and canner so this box is sure to be hotly bid for!

Contact Linda Nunweiler to donate your home canning, or to fill your very own box. Out of town? Email olivercac @gmail.com to find out more about the silent auction.

The Fall Art Show and Sale is on Saturday October 1 and Sunday October 2. The silent auction will run both days, concurrent with the show and sale.  Scroll down to see the poster for the Fall Art Show and Sale….

Shared History with Sister City Chelan, WA

Many people in Oliver are aware we are paired with a sister city in Japan: Bandai.

But did you know Oliver also has a sister city just south of the border:  Chelan, Washington? What makes Chelan and Oliver “sisters”? What similarities in our history, peoples, and culture bring us together?

Visit the Oliver Museum until June 15th to view the display designed by the Chelan Museum. The exhibit includes this old camera, once owned by a Chelan photographer, compared to Ansel Adams for his nature photography.  The exhibit also includes an array of attractive apple crate labels, and native artefacts.

Darryl Mackenzie, curator of the Oliver Museum, will be putting together a similar display for the Chelan Museum, to reciprocate in this cross-border event. Check out the Chelan Museum website here: http://chelanmuseum.com/

Hey! Did you know the Oliver Museum used to be the police detachment? Downstairs was the public offices and jail, and upstairs were the living quarters for the senior officer.  Check out the history of the building as well as the history and culture of our sister city. Darryl is full of fascinating  information, and just waiting for you to pick his brain!

Quail's Roost at Rustico

The Quail’s Roost Gallery had a successful grand opening on Sunday May 1, the permanent exhibit space for the Oliver Sagebrushers. Pictured at left are Bruce Fuller and Dot Cranston enjoying the celebration.  The venue provides an appealing rustic counterpoint to the artwork, as pictured below.  The “Roost” has its own chairlift installed for visitors with decreased mobility. Founding member of the Sagebrushers Agnes Sutherland demonstrates, with Sally Franks and Bruce Fuller looking on.  All artwork is for sale. Turn west of Highway 97 onto Road 16, then left onto 123rd Street, and follow the signs to Rustico Farm and Cellars Winery to view the gallery!
