The time has come to reveal your original masterpiece. The Oliver Community Arts Council ask you to enter in any one of 8 categories and have your art displayed in the 30th annual Fall Art Show and Sale. If you haven’t already created your Rembrandt or Picasso, or perhaps your Michelangelo, there’s still time to unleash your originality and fill in an entry form. The deadline, Friday, September 13th, is fast approaching.  This year’s show is Saturday, October 5th and Sunday, October 6th. Saturday is free and open to all visitors from 3 -9. You receive a ballot and are asked to vote your favourites in each category. That evening the votes are tallied and winners awarded prizes during the opening reception from 7 – 9 pm. Sunday’s admission is only through a Festival of the Grape ticket. Come by and see the display of brilliant local creativity in the community centre, while taking a break from the Festival on the centre’s grounds.

This year we are honoured to have 2 wonderful featured artists. Glenn Clark of Penticton, known by his hockey team mural on the Elks Club wall and his beautifully painted landscapes of the Okanagan. As well, we’re delighted to showcase our own quilting magician, Marianne Parsons. Her artistic quilts have achieved high honours and this year she was recognized at the highest level with a win at the National Quilt Show.

As you look around at the artwork, take your time to view the The Desert Sage Spinners and Weavers display of their “cottages” on the floor and The “Ripoff Artists” annual challenge of “Kandinsky” on the stage.

All the artwork entered in the show is for sale. An ideal chance to purchase that piece of artwork you’ve been looking for. You’ll also want to take a look at the silent auction offerings. All sorts of enticing deals to tempt you. Separate auction items are placed for your bid each day. You’re sure to find something special to take home.

If you’re downsizing or saving something to give away, Please think of us. We’ll be glad to accept your good used, new, items of interest for the silent auction. Email, “attention Bernice” or “Silent Auction” or “FASS” to OliverCAC @ gmail.com   We’ll make arrangements to pick up.

Shhh! Artists busy at work… How about YOU?

We know there are many artists out there already working on their submissions to the Fall Art Show and Sale. How about YOU? There’s still time to send in your entry form! The deadline for the form is September 9, 2011.

The theme is “Outside the Box”, and can be interpreted literally or figuratively. There may be an actual box somewhere in your creation, or perhaps the “box” is more of a metaphorical construct. Maybe what you create reflects how you are thinking outside the normal parameters, or outside your usual medium or perspective. The theme is meant to celebrate what is quirky, inventive, freed from constraint, or just plain different! What’s outside YOUR box?

Enter to Win! Best Bloomin’ Garden Contest deadline extended

The arts council has extended the deadline to enter the Best Bloomin’ Garden Contest to Saturday June 18. Those of you who’ve had a slow start in the wet cold garden this year still have time to participate. If you are doing all the work of making your garden look beautiful this spring anyway, why not pick up an entry form and win a chance to get rewarded for all your hard labour? It’s a no-brainer!

The contest, held in conjunction with the Communities in Bloom project, is meant to motivate residential owners as well as commercial, industrial and municipal property managers to spruce up their outdoor space in time for Communities in Bloom judging this summer.   It’s a little friendly competition and a way to show your community spirit.

Entry forms are easy to fill out! An entry form for the contest is available right here: Best Bloomin’ Garden Contest 2011 Entry Form or pick one up at one of these local businesses: Future Gardens, Tru Value Hardware, Heather’s Threadz, Tussie Mussies, Sagebrush Nursery, and Riverside Nursery.

 Decide what category your “spruced up space” best  fits into. Pick one of:

** Residential Yard or Garden:  Only have time to do the front lawn? or the rock garden? You can choose just a section of your property to enter in the contest!

** Outdoor Living Area:  This might be a constructed deck, patio, water feature, or pool area. Don’t worry if the rest of your property is below par. Show off your outdoor reno!

** Xeriscaped Garden:  If you’ve used drought tolerant plants and materials, this category is just for you. Congratulations for thinking water-smart! 

** Commercial, Municipal or Industrial property: This category is for all non-residential entries. Planters, container gardens, landscaping and other attractive features to beautify your workplace all qualify.

Before you rake, weed, shovel, or plant this spring, take a photo of your space looking its worst. Go on now, we’ll wait……

OK, done? Now, go to town for some seeds, seedlings, shrubbery, edging, plant containers, garden tools, paint, fencing, or xeriscaping supplies. Get your property looking its best. We suggest contest sponsor Future Gardens! Or if you’re adding or renovating a water feature, we suggest arts council member Rod’s Aqua Pools Ltd.

Now take another photo. Doesn’t it look great? Take some more shots. Don’t forget the one of you smiling and holding the shovel, looking grimy but proud. (You look fantastic, by the way.)

“Those Were the Days” at 2010 Fall Art Show and Sale

those-were-the-days“Those Were the Days” is the theme chosen for the 27th annual Fall Art Show and Sale, October 2 and 3, 2010. The Oliver Community Arts Council has been planning this year’s event with inspiration drawn from the Oliver and District Heritage Society.

Museum director Darryl Mackenzie is thrilled about the collaboration between the two organizations on the art show. For him, art and history are a natural pairing: “It is important to reflect on our heritage from time to time. What are the sights, sounds and stories that we want to keep alive in our collective memory? How do we connect with the landscape? Are there special places that make us feel we are ‘home’?”

Artists are encouraged to begin creating their entries as soon as possible. The Oliver arts council intends the theme to be general enough to inspire the widest possible creativity. Some artists may take the opportunity to delve into local history by visiting the Oliver Heritage Museum and Archives or the regional library. But Mackenzie brainstorms a few other ideas: “When we use the theme ‘Those were the days’, we can let our imagination run wild. What days are we referring to? The 1880s? 1920s? How about something that happened last week that we will look fondly on in the future?” Besides the area’s pioneer history, an artist may be inspired by their own childhood, a favourite personal memory, or even a fanciful revisionist view of their favourite historical period.

The Fall Art Show and Sale accepts entries from all media including painting, photography, fibre arts, mixed media, and three-dimensional (which includes sculpture, leather work, pottery, woodwork, jewelry, metalwork, and other objets d’art). A special category, Emerging Artists, encourages submissions from youth 19 and under. Although the majority of artists reside in the South Okanagan, the show and sale is open to all artists across BC. Based on the number of entries, the Oliver Community Arts Council reserves the right to limit and jury submissions. Voting for winners, however, is entirely done by public ballot. All category winners and an overall Best in Show receive awards.

The two-day art show has grown to include live jazz music, a classy silent auction, refreshments, and exhibits of artists at work. The event attracts hundreds of visitors each year. This fall, the arts council anticipates an historical display from the Oliver and District Heritage Society will be a crowd pleaser in the non-competitive portion of the show. The silent auction will continue the same theme, with antique objects offered for bid.

Entry forms will be available at Handworks Gallery and on line at www.oliverartscouncil.org by the third week of April. Deadline for submissions will be the second week of September.
