Agnes Sutherland: For the Sound of Colour

aggie-2

Agnes Sutherland left a legacy of love and commitment to our community.  She also left  a large amount of artwork when she passed away earlier this year.  Agnes worked in oils, pastels, acrylic and collage.  Her family are offering her works for sale to raise funds for the Agnes Sutherland Memorial. The goal is to raise $16,000.00 towards the purchase of a grand piano for the lobby area of the Frank Venables Theatre.  To date the fund has collected over ¼ of that goal.

A grand piano to grace the lobby area of our beautiful landmark theatre opens up so many more opportunities for the space.  Already accommodating receptions, recitals and small social events, the piano will allow an additional variety of musical programs to enhance our community life.

“For the Sound of Colour” takes place Thanksgiving weekend.  Hours are Saturday, Oct.8, 3pm to 9pm and Sunday, Oct. 9, 12pm – 5pm. An opening reception will be held on Saturday from 7pm to 9pm during which time former piano students of Agnes will provide music.  Besides artwork, published books of  Agnes’s poetry will be on sale.  Since the event is Thanksgiving weekend, a table of canning and baking will also be offered.  Everyone is invited to enjoy the memory of Agnes through her art and add her art to your collection.

The event takes place at the Quail’s Nest Arts Centre at 5840 Airport Road in Oliver. Thanks go to the Oliver Community Arts Council for generously enabling this fundraiser to take place through their Contracted Service Agreement program.Quail Logo Slide

A Great Partnership in the Park

Oliver Parks and Recreation partnered with the Oliver Community Arts Council to put on Music in the Park again this year, and it was a great success. OCAC wants to thank Oliver Parks and Rec for a great venue and their continued support!

Oliver Parks and Rec wrote:
Oliver Parks and Recreation would like to thank the Oliver Community Arts Council for the 8 great Thursdays of music that they put on for everyone’s enjoyment this summer. We would also like to thank everyone who came down to support the many talented musicians and singers that performed, the vendors who came out to the sell their wares at the market, and Monsterjump for the bouncy castle and the face painting.

The Music in the Park nights put on the Oliver Community Arts Council wrapped up on Thursday, August 25th with a great turn out to watch the Naden Band from CFB Esquimalt.

We would also like to remind everyone that although the Oliver Community Arts Council Music in the Park is over for another season, there are 2 more Thursdays to come out and enjoy some music.

Thursday September 1st we had the Screendoors from Penticton on stage at 6:30pm: “Look through the ripped screen door to find a musical collaboration that brings new sparks of well-tended fires. We are a front porch candle light party equipped with lyrics like warm blankets and melodies like the glint from wild mid-summer bonfires. Maiya Robbie and Tavis Weir front the folk, rock, bluegrass hybrid alongside talented musicians Stefan Bienz, Dave Mai, and Darren Filipenko.”

Thursday September 8th we will have a couple of different acts on our stage. One will be Oliver Parks and Recreation’s own Carol Sheridan and the other will be The Mysterious Sonic Booms. Our food vendor for this night is still to be confirmed.
On both nights Monsterjump will be here with a bouncy castle and we will have market vendors onsite.

See you on September 8, and again next summer!

Kurt Hutterli exhibits unusual finds

Kurt Hutterli | The Museum of Unknown Civilizations

Kurt HutterliThe Museum of Unknown Civilizations is a project started in Oliver BC by transplanted artist Kurt Hutterli (left).  The museum follows a childhood dream of the artist to explore the unknown in objects encountered in museums as a child.  Years later, myth comes to life through recycled materials creating mysterious and invented artifacts.  These works are designed to make the viewer ask questions ordinarily overlooked, to prod the viewer to seek answers to the unknown.  The work seems to probe an uncertain, uncomfortable future.

IMG_3350Kurt Hutterli emigrated to Oliver, Canada with his wife Marianne in 1996 from Bern, Switzerland leaving behind a stable and successful career as a school teacher, artist and writer. Kurt is a multi-faceted artist; a builder, a painter and a writer, often combining some combination of his tool box when working on a new piece of work, all traits of a Dada artist, which Hutterli is foremost. As a form of inspiration, it is important to note Dada was an artistic and literary movement that began in Switzerland as a reaction to the First World War and the ridiculous state of affairs by creating equally nonsensical work as a form of protest.  While art forms come and go, Dada appears to be an art form with no end in sight, with Dada artists like Hutterli using its form to create discourse on subjects that are important to the time.

This exhibition is Kurt’s second in Penticton.  In 2003 the (then) Art Gallery of the South Okanagan hosted ‘A Colourful Meeting”, an eclectic collection of brightly coloured display made from found and made objects. The exhibition was a precursor to this exhibition in ways.  It was around this time that Kurt began a new project entitled The Museum of Unknown Civilizations.  This exhibition will showcase Hutterli’s latest installment of this ongoing project and fifteen years of work.

MUC CATALOGUEOn behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and friends of the Penticton Art Gallery, I would like to thank Mr. Urs V. Strausak, Consul General of Switzerland, for his financial support enabling the publication of a catalogue to document this exhibition.

A great “thing” this weekend

Marion and TaraMarion Trimble and Tara Hovanes are shown ready to exhibit their art, Thursday to Saturday on Main Street.

This is the first time the artists have shown together and the first time to have a show on this scale not connected with a group. Although their styles are completely different they share a love of art and an appreciation of each other’s talent. Both are members of the Oliver Arts Council, the Sagebrusher Art Club and the RipOff Artists and both have won awards in their categories at the Oliver’s Fall Art Show and Sale. In 2013 and 2014, the two organized “Art Without Borders”, very successful exchange visits with artists from Oliver’s sister city, Lake Chelan. Over time the two have crossed paths, immersed in art and become good friends.

“It’s a Tara & Marion thing” is open daily 10 am to 4 pm from Thursday August 11 through Saturday, August 13 at 6220 Main Street. Take the doorway between The Oliver Shoe Store and the Artisan Bakery to the back of the building. Here you’ll find Tara and Marion welcoming you to view and purchase some of their fine art.TaraMarion Thing

Screaming success

ripoffs 2016Here is a photo of the RipOff artists with their creations just after the bell rang on Saturday signalling the end of this year’s challenge.

Although the iconic painting, “The Scream” by Edvard Munch is considered a depressing picture, the RipOffs did their best to liven it up.   Each of the nine artists added an element from the previous nine years challenges: perhaps a dancing girl from Toulouse Lautrec, a cypress by Vincent van Gogh, or a tulip by Geoorgia O’Keeffe. In addition, the current challenge was to add an anachronism – often a reason for the “scream”. For example, a number of artists chose some form of industrialization or climate change in the background as their anachronism. Guest artist, Bethany Handfield with her encaustic talent was a delightful addition.

To celebrate the group’s 10th anniversary, a grand opening reception was held in “big blue”.  Guests were surrounded by previous year’s RipOff challenge pieces.  Shown together the impressive display gave kudos to the merits of the RipOff’s artistic achievements.

The artists wish to thank the Oliver Community Arts Council  for their support in mounting this year’s special anniversary challenge.

Who knows what the group will conjure up for next year.  Perhaps something acknowledging Canada’s 150th birthday….any suggestions?
