Agnes Sutherland: For the Sound of Colour

aggie-2

Agnes Sutherland left a legacy of love and commitment to our community.  She also left  a large amount of artwork when she passed away earlier this year.  Agnes worked in oils, pastels, acrylic and collage.  Her family are offering her works for sale to raise funds for the Agnes Sutherland Memorial. The goal is to raise $16,000.00 towards the purchase of a grand piano for the lobby area of the Frank Venables Theatre.  To date the fund has collected over ¼ of that goal.

A grand piano to grace the lobby area of our beautiful landmark theatre opens up so many more opportunities for the space.  Already accommodating receptions, recitals and small social events, the piano will allow an additional variety of musical programs to enhance our community life.

“For the Sound of Colour” takes place Thanksgiving weekend.  Hours are Saturday, Oct.8, 3pm to 9pm and Sunday, Oct. 9, 12pm – 5pm. An opening reception will be held on Saturday from 7pm to 9pm during which time former piano students of Agnes will provide music.  Besides artwork, published books of  Agnes’s poetry will be on sale.  Since the event is Thanksgiving weekend, a table of canning and baking will also be offered.  Everyone is invited to enjoy the memory of Agnes through her art and add her art to your collection.

The event takes place at the Quail’s Nest Arts Centre at 5840 Airport Road in Oliver. Thanks go to the Oliver Community Arts Council for generously enabling this fundraiser to take place through their Contracted Service Agreement program.Quail Logo Slide

Coming to the Venables Theatre

Missoula Children’s Theatre and Tuc-el-Nuit Elementary School present

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Take a wondrous trip with Alice, the White Rabbit and a host of others as the Missoula Children’s Theatre and more than 50 Tuc-el-Nuit Elementary School students present ALICE IN WONDERLAND. This original musical production is part of the Missoula Children’s Theatre’s unique international touring project.

The story begins with Alice and her older sister Margaret reading together. Margaret becomes frustrated as Alice is curious about absolutely everything. Suddenly, a White Rabbit appears from nowhere. After a quick and nonsensical conversation, Alice follows the rabbit to a strange and wonderful place. In the course of her adventures, Alice meets a band of Flowers, the King and Queen of Hearts, the Knave and the rest of the suit of Cards, a giant Caterpillar, a Fish, a Frog, the Duchess, the Cook, the Cheshire Cat, the Gryphon, the Mock Turtle, a group of singing Lobsters, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, the Dormouse and Humpty Dumpty. Through it all, Alice grows “curiouser and curiouser” as to where she is and even who she is. In the end, the answers she seeks are unimportant. Wonderland is all nonsense, anyway. As the White Rabbit explains, “Nonsense is fun!”. For more information, call Tuc-el-Nuit at (250) 498-3415

THRILL ON BLUEBERRY HILL: KENNY “Blues Boss” WAYNE

A Fats Domino Musical Tribute

kenny_blues_boss_wayne1The Legendary Blues and Boogie Woogie piano master Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne is hailed by LIVING BLUES magazine as “an artist bringing the piano back to the front ranks of contemporary Blues.” This 2006 Juno Award winner was raised in New Orleans and his powerful music recalls the era when piano players like Fats Domino worked the “strolls” in dozens of American cities. Resplendent in one of his many multi-hued, French, custom-tailored stage suits, he’s a throwback to the golden age of classic rhythm and blues. Wayne is a soulful vocalist and an electrifying performer – a cross between Fats Domino and Professor Longhair.

This concert is sure to be a Wine Festival highlight and all proceeds will go directly to the South Okanagan Similkameen Chapter of the MS Society. Come early and enjoy a glass of Road 13 wine which will be available for purchase, or enjoy a glass during intermission or after the concert when you can mingle with Kenny and his incredibly talented band.

All over North America and Europe, Kenny’s concerts sell out quickly, so buy your tickets early.

Frank Venables Theatre Presents

LORNE ELLIOTT COMEDY SHOW

lorneelliot-web_origCanadian born LORNE ELLIOTT has performed from Newfoundland to New York City, from Los Angeles to Australia and points in between. Lorne started performing in 1974 as a folk musician in East Coast Canada. At the same time he kept writing fiction as well as songs, monologues and one-liners. The outcome of such a training is a very special show of comedy and music, totally original, entertaining, foolish and uplifting. Along with his unique performance style it is the timelessness of his material, joined with keen observations on today’s trends that make LORNE ELLIOTT ‘s work so special. Lorne has been gracing the airwaves as host of CBC Radio’s “Madly Off In All Directions” for 11 seasons.

“I was born so far back I can hardly remember and grew up normally, I think. I started going on stage at a time when hair like mine was fashionable, and I hung a guitar hung around my neck to complete the look. Somewhere around that time people started laughing at me, and I saw no reason why I shouldn’t join them. I’ve made a living off the products of my imagination for thirty years, so if you’re wondering if that’s possible I am here to tell you it is. Give it a whirl. You just might find an audience.”

Tyson’s “Quartette” returns to sing

by David Badger

Here It Is……

Cindy Church, Caitlin Hanford, Gwen Swick, and Sylvia Tyson are Quartette and they are coming HERE for Christmas. If you were lucky enough to catch them in an intimate concert setting two summers ago then you know just how good they are. We thought we could have sold that show out 2 or 3 times over back then, so we are moving to the big venue at Venables to give you the concert of the season. Medici’s, along with our co-sponsors, the Oliver Grandmothers for Africa are going to give you the concert of your life!

Since their debut in 1993, the four members of Quartette have been both publicly and critically acclaimed for their lush harmonies and delightfully diverse repertoire. These incredibly talented women are seasoned singer/songwriters whose influences range from blues and gospel to folk and country to jazz and pop.

The ladies have two Christmas CDs under their belts, “A Quartette Christmas.” and “It’s Christmas!” They deliver a unique blend of Christmas music in their trademark harmonies in a show that is truly reverent. They are more than anything else, ultimate professionals. An evening with Quartette is always magical and oh so amazing. Come have one of those!

Quartette performs at the Frank Venables Theatre on Wednesday, December 7th at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $45 each and seating is assigned. Get yours quickly at the Venables box office, online at venablestheatre.ca or at Medici’s at 522 Fairview Road. 250-498-2228

Local duo, Mountainview Drive, will open the night performing classic harmonies from the 1940s to the 1960’s. They’ll take you back to the good old days when lyrics told stories, and harmony soothed souls.

Double Header at Medici’s

On Saturday, September 17th Medici’s presents a fantastic Doubleheader Fall Classic. Two great bands will take our stage and entertain you like none other.

First up will be Mountainview Drive, a local band that has been getting a ton of attention, notoriety and well-earned celebrity here in the valley.

Corrie and Stephane are Mountain View Drive, and they harmonize the great oldies, giving a funky spin to hits from the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. They’ll take you back to the good old days when lyrics told stories, and harmony soothed souls. Sinatra, The Everly Brothers, The Carpenters, Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and on and on. These two are as smooth as silk and polished to a gleam.

After the break, a great duo, Chicken-Like Birds, who debuted their stuff at Medici’s in the summer of 2015, will step up with some sweet creative and oh-so-funky sounds.

Chicken-Like Birds, sloppy blues guitar specialist Ari Lantela and Jasmin Frederickson on the double bass sing country blues and ragtime songs about adventure, independent women, cornbread and their own strange relationship. Slap in some on-stage antics, funny stories and some endearing awkwardness and you’ve got Chicken-Like Birds!

Tickets are $20 in advance and seating is assigned. Doors will open at 6:30 and Mountainview Drive will open at 7:30.

A Great Partnership in the Park

Oliver Parks and Recreation partnered with the Oliver Community Arts Council to put on Music in the Park again this year, and it was a great success. OCAC wants to thank Oliver Parks and Rec for a great venue and their continued support!

Oliver Parks and Rec wrote:
Oliver Parks and Recreation would like to thank the Oliver Community Arts Council for the 8 great Thursdays of music that they put on for everyone’s enjoyment this summer. We would also like to thank everyone who came down to support the many talented musicians and singers that performed, the vendors who came out to the sell their wares at the market, and Monsterjump for the bouncy castle and the face painting.

The Music in the Park nights put on the Oliver Community Arts Council wrapped up on Thursday, August 25th with a great turn out to watch the Naden Band from CFB Esquimalt.

We would also like to remind everyone that although the Oliver Community Arts Council Music in the Park is over for another season, there are 2 more Thursdays to come out and enjoy some music.

Thursday September 1st we had the Screendoors from Penticton on stage at 6:30pm: “Look through the ripped screen door to find a musical collaboration that brings new sparks of well-tended fires. We are a front porch candle light party equipped with lyrics like warm blankets and melodies like the glint from wild mid-summer bonfires. Maiya Robbie and Tavis Weir front the folk, rock, bluegrass hybrid alongside talented musicians Stefan Bienz, Dave Mai, and Darren Filipenko.”

Thursday September 8th we will have a couple of different acts on our stage. One will be Oliver Parks and Recreation’s own Carol Sheridan and the other will be The Mysterious Sonic Booms. Our food vendor for this night is still to be confirmed.
On both nights Monsterjump will be here with a bouncy castle and we will have market vendors onsite.

See you on September 8, and again next summer!
