Flower power exhibit at Medici’s

Medici's 1

The Oliver Sagebrushers art club is preparing for their second exhibit at Medici’s Gelateria and Coffeehouse. Over the winter, patrons at the coffeehouse have been able to sip their latte while enjoying the “Black and White” themed artwork on the walls. Changing it up for spring, the Sagebrushers are preparing some colourful canvases with a spring theme: Flower Power.

The opening reception is Friday March 13 at 7:00 p.m. This is not a “Friday Night Live” evening. Instead the Sagebrushers will be hiring their own musician to provide some background accompaniment. All works are for sale. Enjoy wine, beer, coffees, and desserts. 522 Fairview Road.

New theatre manager announced

HamptonThe Board of the Oliver Community Theatre Society is pleased to announce the hiring of Bettyanne Hampton as the new manager of Oliver’s new Frank Venables Theatre.

Bettyanne, who spent her teenage years as a student in Osoyoos, has worked extensively in the field of arts management, presentation, and education for many years in various centres on Vancouver Island and more recently in Fort St John where she has been the Executive Director of the North Peace Cultural Centre since 2010.

“The Board is very excited to have attracted such a strong leader within BC’s lively art scene. Bettyanne is bringing a wealth of energy and expertise in facility management and equally importantly, in collaborative programming and community and professional presentations” says Wendy Newman President of the Board of Directors of the theatre’s operating society.

Bettyanne also has an impressive work history with arts education having managed the Comox Valley Youth Music Centre for seven years where she worked with music and theatre educators from across the province.

Bettyanne will be joining the theatre on March 30th, just in time to represent Oliver’s new Frank Venables Theatre at the mid-April province-wide arts touring conference in Vancouver where BC community theatre managers and presenters work together to plan many of the tours for professional artist which will be presented over the next 2 – 3 years.

Medici’s awards new trivia champs

Masters of Trivia winners 2015

The “Masters of Trivia” has a new champion team. Medici’s was full on the evening of Friday February 27 as seven teams waged trivia war in this Premier League tournament. There were many new faces, but the biggest battle of the night was between the 2013 co-winners. ‘John Won’t Care’ pulled away from ‘The Mighty Pixels’ early in the battle and held their lead all the way home.

Tongue-in-cheek, quiz-master David Badger describes the evening’s competition:

“The thin veneer of friendship evaporated as egos, raw with anxiety, lashed out to taunt and maim their fellow competitors. Five new teams: The Willowbrook Wonders, The Jukeboxers, Gravity’s Rejects, Lisa and Co. and of course, The Idiot Savants (new dress code required here, courtesy of Ed Dukes) all made their move to snatch glory from John Won’t Care BUT……they were denied!”

Pictured with a death grip on The Einstein Cup are the new champs: Merrill Bjerkan, Helene Urcullu, John (“I don’t care”) Bjerkan, Penelope Johnson and Patrick Reid.
