The Ripoff Artists Down Mexico Way

The Ripoff Artists are singing the praises of Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991). In dynamic colourful style, Tamayo combined Mexican subject matter and the earthy solid shapes of Aztec and Mayan art with the forms and styles of artists like Picasso and Matisse. The Ripoff Artists will compose their own tributes to Tamayo’s 1981 painting “Tres Personajes Cantando” (Three Singing People). Painted in a restrained palette, this work demonstrates Tamayo’s masterful use of colour and rich texture.

Tamayo worked at the National Museum of Archaeology in Mexico City, then lived in New York where he saw works by European painters. He rejected the political themes and murals of Mexican artists such as Diego Riviera. Instead, Tamayo drew on both the Pre-Columbian art of Mexico and on modern European principles of art. He worked mainly on canvas, combining vibrant colours and textured surfaces with semi-abstract shapes and themes drawn from Mexican life. He summed up his approach to art when he said, “Art is a means of expression that must be understood by everybody, everywhere. It grows out of the earth, the textures of our lives, and our experience.”

From Tuesday July 3 to Saturday July 7 at the Quail’s Nest Arts Centre in Oliver, come in and enjoy the harmonious interplay of artists working, each in their own medium, as they strain to hit the right note by week’s end. The usual band of improvisational maestros will be there: Enid Baker, Tara Hovanes, Kurt Hutterli, Terry Irvine, Barbara Levant, Norberto Rodriguez , Marion Trimble, JoAnn Turner, Russell Work. This year, they’re also joined by guest artist, Jan Kreut.

Monday evening, July 2, join the artists at an opening reception from 6 to 8 pm at the Quail’s Nest. There will be Mexican food, and a display of preliminary pieces based on other works by Tamayo.

SOAP Theatre AGM Coming Up!

SOAP Theatre will hold its AGM at 7pm on Thursday June 14. If you’re a member, interested in becoming a member, or want to know more about the upcoming season and hang out with theatre types, this is your chance!

A review of the past year and a preview of the coming season will be provided to members and other interested people at the society’s annual general meeting on June 14. The evening begins with a potluck dinner at 6 pm at Big Blue followed by the meeting at 7 pm. Elections for the executive and board members will take place at the meeting.

More information on the meeting or the upcoming season can be obtained by email at info@soaptheatre.ca

SOAP Theatre Gears Up for New Season!

The curtain has barely come down on SOAP Theatre’s last production of the 2017-18 season but already planning is in full gear for the 2018-19 season.

The award winning community theatre group successfully staged three productions this past season and it plans to continue with that ambitious schedule next year. The season was capped off with Outside Mullingar winning several awards at Theatre B.C.’s recent Okanagan Zone drama festival in Vernon, including Jennifer MacNeil as Best Actress, Director Tom Szalay for Best Newcomer and Brian Hesje for Best Sound Design. The adjudicator also had praise for Jeff Smith in the best actor category and gave a shout out to Tom Szalay in the best set design category.

First up for the next season is a dramatic production with a twist. Rights have been obtained for It’s A Wonderful Life- A Live Radio Broadcast, adapted by Joe Landry. Frank Venables Theatre will be transformed into a radio broadcast studio as this beloved holiday classic comes to captivating life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve. Part of the fun will be having the “foley artist” or sound effects technician, on stage, creating the necessary effects rather than relying on recordings played from the sound booth. The play will run the first week of December.

Planned for late January and early February is Beyond Therapy, by Christopher Durang and directed by Nathan Linders. When upscale New York’s two least license-worthy therapists inadvertently send two patients on a collision course, the unintended consequences of the worst blind date ever disrupt the lives of everyone involved, even the therapists themselves.  Can these two therapists, their patients, and two hapless bystanders overcome their hang-ups, or are they Beyond Therapy?

Lawrence & Holloman, to be directed by Trevor Leigh, is the dark and twisted story of a cynical and suicidal accounting clerk (Holloman) who gets taken under the wing of a happy-go-lucky, ever-optimistic suit salesman (Lawrence). Lawrence the optimist tries to teach Holloman the pessimist how to live happily and remain positive, until his own good luck starts to turn. Lawrence’s fiancee dumps him, his car is demolished, his dog goes missing, he loses his job, and his apartment is burned to the ground… and that’s just the beginning! Is happiness determined by our outlook on life? Or can our destiny be changed by another?  The play is written by Vancouver’s own two-time Governor General Award-winning writer Morris Panych and will be SOAP Theatre’s entry in the 2019 Okanagan Drama Festival. It will be staged in late April and early May.

Auditions for Beyond Therapy and Lawrence and Holloman will take place on June 9 and 10 from 1 to 4 pm at Big Blue, the large metal building at the Quail’s Nest Arts Centre on Airport Road in Oliver. An audition call for It’s A Wonderful Life – A Live Radio Broadcast will go out in September.

Beyond Therapy is seeking four men and two women. Bruce is a lawyer in his mid to late thirties; Prudence is mid to late thirties; Bob is a pharmacist in his mid to late thirties; Stuart, a therapist, can range from early forties to early fifties; Charlotte is a therapist and can range from late thirties to late forties; Andrew is a waiter, preferably younger than Bob and Bruce and ideally mid
to late twenties. Questions about beyond Therapy can be directed to Linders at info@soplayers.ca

Director Leigh will be looking for two males, ages 25-60, for the lead roles. The actors will have lots of stage time and will be challenged in their roles. Also sought are two females, ages 20 to 80.

The play will have a live original sound score and sound effects. One or both of the female actors should be able to play piano or guitar or violin or cello or the vibes or any interesting instrument. One and/or both will also be asked to contribute live sound effects on stage and will be required to sing.

Leigh is looking for creative souls who love music and theatre and are interested in creating original compositions and sound effects. If you have any original music or recordings please submit a sample to the director at ftleigh@mac.com.

More information on the meeting or the upcoming season can be obtained by email at info@soaptheatre.ca

Patio Party at Firehall Brewery

May Long Weekend is coming up, which marks one year since we opened our Patio! So we figure it’s worth a celebration, with another May Long Patio Party, Friday – Monday (May 18-21). We’ll have bouncy castles and food trucks on-site all weekend, drink specials and music entertainment. Friday will kick off with Thai On The Fly serving
delicious dinners, and a Funky 70’s Dance Party with DJ Master Blaster. We’re still on
the hunt for a band for Saturday night and a food truck for Saturday-Monday, but either way, we’ll have a wine feature from Oliver’s new La Casa Bianca Winery, and bouncey castles and games from the winery family’s other company: Fun4Life.

To continue the Patio Party all the way to May Long Monday (Victoria Day), we’ll obviously have to open Mondays again! We’ve been closing on Mondays for the
cold season, but we figure it’s safe to say that the warm season is back! From May
Long on, we’ll be open Mondays again, and extending our Beer Shop hours later
into the nights. The new hours are:

Monday – Thursday: Noon-9pm
Friday-Saturday: Noon-11pm
Sunday: Noon-5pm

Heritage roots go deep

Oliver and District Heritage Society will be officially opening their new permanent exhibit “Deep Roots” with MP Richard Cannings and other dignitaries on May 16th 2018. “Deep Roots” is about Oliver and area’s history, culture, and identity, exploring themes such as geology, natural history, language, sports and recreation, agriculture, and transportation. The public are welcome to join us in this celebration at the Museum (474 School avenue) on Wednesday May 16th at 7:30 in the evening – immediately following our Annual General Meeting at 6:30 pm.

The meeting will adjourn by 7:15 and will join the public at 7:30 pm in front of the Museum for the ribbon cutting with our special guests, including Member of Parliament Richard Cannings. “Deep Roots” is a unique exhibition for a number of reasons: It’s been designed and constructed completely in-house, and features never-before seen local photos, artifacts, and historical documents. This exhibit features S’yilx captikwl (oral histories), and includes extensive N’Syilxcn terminology and pronunciation guides throughout. It will also be the only Museum in the province to have its complete exhibit translated into both Punjabi and French (coming later in 2018). There’s also an audio component; a dramatized radio broadcast show of actual historical events and newspapers advertisements from 1920-1945 Oliver, specially written and recorded by Peach City Radio for this exhibit.

The Heritage Garden will be nearing completion, pending cooperation of the temperamental spring weather. Visitors will still be able to enjoy the outdoor exhibits and view the Fairview Jail as well. The public will be able to enjoy Deep Roots with snacks, beverages, and plenty of good company in the evening until 9:30 pm. All are welcome to both to attend both the AGM and exhibit opening.

He is the leader and composer of the internationally renowned Marc Atkinson Trio (and co-founder, composer and performer in the acclaimed, The Bills). The music of this virtuosic group is melodically captivating, sensually charged and ferociously, technically awe-inspiring. Violinist Cameron Wilson is a composer and arranger whose works have been performed by numerous symphony orchestras and ensembles and soloists across Canada and the U.S.

DOUBLE DOUBLE DUO

Classically trained international soloists, they use comedy, virtuosity, and musical sensitivity to bring their broad repertoire to life. Wolak and Bridge began their collaboration in 2011. They have since performed across Canada for arts organizations as diverse as the music they play – from the Ontario Philharmonic to the Calgary Stampede. Actively touring in Poland, France, Ecuador, and across Canada, DDD performs their all- original arrangements of classical showpieces, sensitive jazz ballades, and fiery folk music from around the globe.

O-CELLI

What can sound better than a cello? Eight cellos! Ô-Celli is a musical project, characterized by its originality and dynamic presentation, in the world of classical music. Since its creation in 2010, through the initiative of Sébastien Walnier (Principal Cello of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Brussels) and Alexandre Beauvoir (chamber musician), these eight musicians never fail to share their passion for the extraordinary richness of their instrument. Ô-Celli has had the honor of performing for numerous European festivals. Most notably, the International Cello Festival in Beauvais, the Flâneries musicales de Reims, the Festival Sully sur Loire (France), Festival Musiq’3 (Belgian National classical radio station), and the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie (Belgium). 2017 was highlighted by Ô-Celli’s first international tour, performing from Ontario to Nova Scotia in Canada. In addition to this adventure they also broadened their horizons with concerts in Switzerland and Luxembourg.
