SOAP auditions for comedy The Long Weekend

The South Okanagan Amateur Players invite the public to audition for its fall comedy-of-manners, The Long Weekend by Canada’s most prolific and popular playwright Norm Foster. Auditions are Sunday April 15 at the Quail’s Nest Arts Centre in Oliver (5840 Airport St.) and Monday April 16 at St. Christopher’s Lower Hall in Osoyoos (87 St and 74th Ave). Both auditions run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. No previous experience or audition piece required.

The Long Weekend opens at the summer home of successful lawyer Max and his wife Wynn. The couple invite Wynn’s old high school friend Abby and her husband Roger for a weekend getaway. Polite exchanges quickly give way to thinly masked animosity as old jealousies and insecurities resurface. Pompous Max dislikes Roger’s bohemian life as a novelist, while Roger in turn feels threatened by Max’s financial success. Wynn and Abby each secretly dread the other’s criticism of their lifestyle and tastes. Much of the comedy stems from the contrast between the public niceties and the private barbed remarks. Surprising revelations and sharp, biting dialogue turn the weekend into a hilarious disaster as the whole facade of friendship collapses.

At a recent read-through of the play, SOAP Board members were literally weeping with laughter and gasping out the dialogue. The script moves at a whip-cracking pace. The one-liners are snappy and cleverly resurface through the play even funnier than before. The plot is tight but never improbable, and best of all there are several unexpected twists, with a satisfying humdinger in the final few minutes of the play.

The Long Weekend requires four actors: two women of a similar age and their husbands. Director Ted Osborne will consider actors from mid-30s to mid-50s for the roles. Male ages can be more flexible.

The play will be produced over two weekends in late October. Cast read-throughs will begin in May, with some occasional rehearsing during the summer, and more intense rehearsing beginning in September. Cast schedules will be considered when booking rehearsal times. For more information, contact SOAP @ telus.net or director Ted Osborne at 250-495-2776.

Final concert will cap a great concert series

by Marion Boyd, South Okanagan Concert Society

Mark your calendar for Friday February 24th, when the Penderecki String Quartet performs in the final concert of the South Okanagan Concert Society winter season. In the second decade of an extraordinary career, this celebrated chamber ensemble’s performing schedule takes them annually to the great concert stages of North and South America, Europe and the Far East. Making up the prestigious quartet are Jeremy Bell, violin, Jerzy Kaplanek, violin, Christine Vlajk, viola, and Paul Pulford, cello. The quartet has collaborated with many eminent ensembles as well as with artists such as James Campbell and Janina Fialkowska who have thrilled audiences here in past years.

The concert will be at the temporary venue of the Oliver Alliance Church just north of Oliver at 7:30 pm. Tickets are on sale at Beyond Bliss Esthetics in Oliver, Imperial Office Pro in Osoyoos and at the door. This is the time to use up any remaining admissions on your flex pass and to bring your cheque book to catch the Early Bird prices for next season. Single admissions are $20 and students 17 and under are admitted free. This is a great opportunity to introduce the young musicians in your family to world class live music.

Sometimes people ask me why I love the concert series music so much. I decided to ask members of the audience what draws them. Here is what Brita Park told me:

“I’ve got this image of my recently immigrated parents in the early 50’s. My Dad had been working two jobs (16 hours a day) and had finally earned a bit more than was required for the daily food to feed a family of eight. My mother’s immediate thought was “New shoes for the kids!”. Too late! To her dismay, my father came home without the extra money. Instead he carried a beautiful record player and proudly chose one record from a stack of new LPs. The lively strains of a Strauss waltz filled the house, drifted over the porch and the orchard below. Father gallantly twirled my mother around the living room and we children joined in.

“Later my mother admitted that it was my father who had gauged the family needs correctly, not she. Our old shoes would have to do. It was the beautiful shared music of Strauss, Chopin, Mozart, Bach and Mendelssohn that lifted the family up, accompanying, sustaining, and delighting us through all our years of growing up.”

So come and share the beautiful music of the Penderecki String Quartet with others who love music. Allow yourself to be lifted up, sustained and delighted. Don’t be afraid of winter roads. Call Maureen at 250 495 7978 if you want to arrange transportation in the van. Join us. Come!

Summer’s Coming and so is… Music in the Park

Summertime is outdoor concert time in Oliver! The arts council has been hosting Music in the Park concerts at the old CPR station for 11 years now, and they keep getting better and better. We make sure to bring back your favourites, but there’s always lots of new music in the mix.

This year, things get off to a heart thumping start with something new: West African drumming and dancing courtesy of Nankama, with leader Bobby Bovenzi. Local audiences will know Lou Lou and the Scrappers,  newcomers to Music in the Park,  and will love their  1940s flair.  The Naden Band of the Maritime Pacific will present sure-fire entertainment.

Some old faves return after an absence: Long John Baldy ( a tongue in cheek name for a local rock /alternative group), and Shindigger Rick Wood with his classic rock n roll on guitar.

Gospel Night always brings out a crowd. Ingrid Schellenberg returns with lyrical sounds from her harp. And the season would never be complete without Jazz  Out West closing out the summer. They are pictured at left from their 2010 concert.

Young stars shine at Showcase on Wednesday

Here’s something that will warm your heart and make you smile! Support our young local performers by attending the Showcase of talent concert Wednesday May 4 at 7 p.m. at the Quail’s Nest Arts Centre.

Choir goes “Down Memory Lane” April 16 &17

It’s been ten years already, since Alice Deroche started waving her arms (and sometimes stamping her feet ) in front of a motley crew of local yokels who grew into their name: The Sage Valley Voices! Her dream of a thriving community choir singing and smiling their way through the seasons, sometimes with a bit of musical theatre thrown in, making happy and pleasing sounds, continues to be fulfilled as evidenced by the growth of our audiences. The choir’s performances at the Oliver United Church are most often sold out, and the choir has grown too, numbering almost 50 now, doubling in size since the beginning and challenging Alice to keep us all in line.

We’ll be singing in style for the tenth spring in a row. Come help us celebrate Alice for her years of dedication creating these programs and offering them to you. Come join our party as we dream of yesteryear, presenting many of the favourites we’ve performed in the past. (Photo at left is from the 2010 concert “Sixties with a Twist”) We’ve prepared love songs, sad songs, a bit of country, certainly spiritual and gospel. Rumours of guest appearances the likes of Elvis, Marilyn, Manhattan Transfer, and perhaps even “Mama”, shouldn’t be exaggerated – but guaranteed each performance will be full of surprises. Of course there’ll be swinging and swooning, boogying and jiving as we present “Those Fabulous Fifties”. Count on some foot stomping (or at least tapping) of your own during “Shades of Country” and just see if you can sit still during “The Sixties With a Twist.”

Alice has led the choir through many additions and changes. We’re fortunate this year to get a sampling of memorable moments from the last ten years. Is fashion your thing? Even just to laugh at, or to remember that you used to be able to fit into some of them? Do you like coffee and goodies afterwards? Well, it’s a party, so you can be sure something will be arranged! Do you enjoy silent auctions? You’re bound to find something you’d like to bid on, so break open that piggy bank and bring your loonie and toonie collection. Got a special anniversary coming up? We do! Let’s get together and celebrate! Bring your honey, your Mom or your favourite aunt, bring the kids and grandkids or a special neighbour and share with them our gift of song.

See you
