The Oliver Community Arts Councils Fall Art Show and Sale (FASS) will be “Going Wild” on October 1st and 2nd. The show and sale runs jointly with the wildly popular Festival of the Grape at the Oliver Community Centre. The two-day event includes a competition in nine categories, public voting, exhibits and demos by featured artists, live entertainment, an evening reception, and a draw for a stocked wine fridge.
Visual artists in all media and of all ages are encouraged to enter with their interpretation of this theme. “Going Wild” could inspire an abstract expression of wild emotions: passion, anger, lust, or joyful abandon. The theme could reflect an artist’s choice of unusual media, going “wild and crazy” with new fibres, new digital techniques, new designs, new surfaces and applications. The theme could refer to the artist’s choice of subject matter: psychological turmoil, political ideology, liberation, anarchy, or a “back-to-the-land” philosophy. “Going Wild” might also inspire a nature lover to submit a work featuring flora or fauna, such as an overgrown garden, an exotic animal, or a wilderness adventure. We hope this theme gives you great scope as you decide what you will enter this year. What is WILD for you?
Categories include photography, fibre arts, oils, acrylics, watercolours, three-dimensional, and other media (encaustic, pen and ink, mixed media, etc), Two categories for youth, emerging artists and budding artists, invite entries in any visual medium. Awards are given in each category, as well as an overall “Best Interpretation of the Theme” (Best in Show).
Entry forms must be received by Friday September 9, 2016. Artwork need not be completed by that date. We just need to know what it is you plan to enter! Artwork is delivered to the venue on the morning of the show, Saturday October 1. This gives artists up to three extra weeks to complete their piece.
Individual membership in the Oliver Community Arts Council ($15) is not required but does reduce the entry fee for Adult submissions, as well as providing benefits through the year. Emerging artist submissions are a $10 fee. For budding artists the entry fee is waived. If you became a member of the arts council as part of last year’s FASS, your membership is good through to the end of 2016. If you purchase a membership as part of this year`s FASS, that membership is good through 2017 (and the 2017 FASS). That means you are good for two shows in one! If you are uncertain of your current membership status, please contact us.
Check out our website at any time. There you will find forms always available under “Forms” or “Membership”. Please contact us by email if you have questions. olivercac @ gmail.com

This year we are honoured to have 2 wonderful featured artists. Glenn Clark of Penticton, known by his hockey team mural on the Elks Club wall and his beautifully painted landscapes of the Okanagan. As well, we’re delighted to showcase our own quilting magician, Marianne Parsons. Her artistic quilts have achieved high honours and this year she was recognized at the highest level with a win at the National Quilt Show.
As you look around at the artwork, take your time to view the The Desert Sage Spinners and Weavers display of their “cottages” on the floor and The “Ripoff Artists” annual challenge of “Kandinsky” on the stage.
All the artwork entered in the show is for sale. An ideal chance to purchase that piece of artwork you’ve been looking for. You’ll also want to take a look at the silent auction offerings. All sorts of enticing deals to tempt you. Separate auction items are placed for your bid each day. You’re sure to find something special to take home.
If you’re downsizing or saving something to give away, Please think of us. We’ll be glad to accept your good used, new, items of interest for the silent auction. Email, “attention Bernice” or “Silent Auction” or “FASS” to OliverCAC @ gmail.com We’ll make arrangements to pick up.
Come experience a delightful evening of song with the incredibly talented and lovely Saige Carlson. Saige will be representing all of BC at this competition organized by the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations. Saige will be accompanied by the well known and renowned pianist, Mr. Dennis Nordlund. This is a fund- raising event designed to help Saige travel and compete at one of the highest levels of vocal excellence in our nation. This is the big stage and this is a young woman from our midst. Please come and support her and treat yourself to a wonderful talent.
If you are unable to attend, there will also be a recital at theLakeside Resort on Sunday June 23rd at 4:30 PM.
The South Okanagan can boast some of the best quilters in Canada, as seen in the Canadian Quilters Association’s National Juried Show held in Penticton, May 16-18.
Marianne Parsons from Oliver won first place in the Original Design Abstract Pictorial category for her “Set in Stone” quilt (at left) with 5 fossil panels on it. The award came with a $1000 prize. Marianne is a member of the Fabricators, a local art quilt group, and the Double O Quilters Guild. She is also a member of the Fibre Art Network, and will participate in a curated show of work by that group at the La Conner Quilt Museum in La Conner, WA, Oct. 10 – Dec. 31, 2013. Two of her quilts can also be seen in the Grand National exhibit at the Josef Schneider Quilt Haus in Waterloo, ON for the summer.
Joan Bielun from Penticton (another one of the Fabricators) also won first prize in her category for her “Elements of Change” quilt featuring the giant Wave. It was nice to see that the first award of the evening ceremony in Penticton went to a Penticton resident! That quilt is the cover quilt on the national magazine, The Canadian Quilter, summer issue.
Maya Brouwer, a former Oliver resident, now a Double O Quilters Guild member living near Victoria and a Fabricator as well, won the Viewer’s Choice award for her Trend-Tex Challenge, “Hide and Seek” (at left). Her piece also earned the highest bid at the event.
Miriam March is a Double O Quilters member and is a longarm quilter from Rock Creek. She took first place in Canada in the Bed or Wall Quilt longarm quilted category at Quilt BC with her quilt, “Lattice Garden”. (pictured foreground below, Pat Kelly photo, Boundary Creek Times)
Several other area quilters earned awards as well. Judy Harpur from Rock Creek, (who grew up in Oliver), earned a Judge’s Award for her quilt, “Picasso’s 39 Ford”, and Karen Thatcher from the Grand Forks area won 2nd place in the Original Design, Abstract Pictorial category.
To see all of the winning quilts, go to www.canadianquilter.com then click on Galleries on the red bar, and then on NJS 2013.
The Fall Art Show and Sale (FASS) is always the arts council’s biggest event, and this year we’re celebrating our 35th anniversary! In honour of that milestone, and to encourage the absolute best work, the arts council has announced the theme this year is “Artist’s Choice” .
Works across all visual media are welcome: Photography, Fibre Arts, Three-Dimensional (sculpture, metalwork, jewelry, woodcarving, basketry, etc), Oils, Acrylics, Watercolours, Other Media (mixed media, encaustic, pen and ink, charcoal, etc) , and Emerging Artists (under 18 years of age). Up to two (2) works may be submitted per artist. The public judges and awards prizes in each category, and also selects Best in Show. All works must be for sale. Please read the entry form for details about readying your work for competition.
The annual competition, exhibit and sale will be on Saturday October 5 and Sunday October 6 this year. As usual, it is held in conjunction with Oliver’s Festival of the Grape at the Oliver Community Centre.

All artists are invited to submit a Call for Entry form to enter the 2012 Fall Art Show and Sale. Don’t delay! The deadline is Friday September 7.
The theme is “Casting Shadows“, and is open to literal or figurative interpretation. Having a specific theme each year encourages new works, allows for more creativity and co-ordination with other elements in the show, and increases audience appeal. Every effort is made to choose a theme which is accessible to various artistic media and styles.
The Oliver Community Arts Council believes that anyone who “casts a shadow” is an artist! Show us your hidden talents! Don’t keep them in the shadows. Choose your favourite category and enter to win, sell, or simply impress your friends. You deserve your artistic moment in the spotlight!
New works will be accepted in seven categories: Watercolour Paintings, Oil Paintings, Acrylic Paintings, Fibre Arts, Three Dimensional, Photography, Other Media (mixed media, encaustic, pen and ink, etc), and Emergin Artists (under 18 years).
We know there are many artists out there already working on their submissions to the Fall Art Show and Sale. How about YOU? There’s still time to send in your entry form! The deadline for the form is September 9, 2011.
The theme is “Outside the Box”, and can be interpreted literally or figuratively. There may be an actual box somewhere in your creation, or perhaps the “box” is more of a metaphorical construct. Maybe what you create reflects how you are thinking outside the normal parameters, or outside your usual medium or perspective. The theme is meant to celebrate what is quirky, inventive, freed from constraint, or just plain different! What’s outside YOUR box?
For an entry form, visit Lauralee’s Treasure Cellar on Main Street or the Oliver Visitor Centre. Email OliverCAC @gmail.com to ask for a copy emailed to you or simply download the form here by clicking on the link. 2011 FASS Entry Form Print out on one sheet of 8x 11 using both sides of the page, and fold in half.

The arts council has extended the deadline to enter the Best Bloomin’ Garden Contest to Saturday June 18. Those of you who’ve had a slow start in the wet cold garden this year still have time to participate. If you are doing all the work of making your garden look beautiful this spring anyway, why not pick up an entry form and win a chance to get rewarded for all your hard labour? It’s a no-brainer!
The contest, held in conjunction with the Communities in Bloom project, is meant to motivate residential owners as well as commercial, industrial and municipal property managers to spruce up their outdoor space in time for Communities in Bloom judging this summer. It’s a little friendly competition and a way to show your community spirit.
Entry forms are easy to fill out! An entry form for the contest is available right here: Best Bloomin’ Garden Contest 2011 Entry Form or pick one up at one of these local businesses: Future Gardens, Tru Value Hardware, Heather’s Threadz, Tussie Mussies, Sagebrush Nursery, and Riverside Nursery.
Decide what category your “spruced up space” best fits into. Pick one of:
** Residential Yard or Garden: Only have time to do the front lawn? or the rock garden? You can choose just a section of your property to enter in the contest!
** Outdoor Living Area: This might be a constructed deck, patio, water feature, or pool area. Don’t worry if the rest of your property is below par. Show off your outdoor reno!
** Xeriscaped Garden: If you’ve used drought tolerant plants and materials, this category is just for you. Congratulations for thinking water-smart!
** Commercial, Municipal or Industrial property: This category is for all non-residential entries. Planters, container gardens, landscaping and other attractive features to beautify your workplace all qualify.
Email your entry form by June 18 to olivergardencontest @ hotmail.ca , or email olivercac @ gmail.com for other entry arrangements. And don’t worry — you can keep on beautifying up to the beginning of July when judging by the Oliver Heirloom Garden Club takes place.
