Agnes Sutherland: For the Sound of Colour
Agnes Sutherland left a legacy of love and commitment to our community. She also left a large amount of artwork when she passed away earlier this year. Agnes worked in oils, pastels, acrylic and collage. Her family are offering her works for sale to raise funds for the Agnes Sutherland Memorial. The goal is to raise $16,000.00 towards the purchase of a grand piano for the lobby area of the Frank Venables Theatre. To date the fund has collected over ¼ of that goal.
A grand piano to grace the lobby area of our beautiful landmark theatre opens up so many more opportunities for the space. Already accommodating receptions, recitals and small social events, the piano will allow an additional variety of musical programs to enhance our community life.
“For the Sound of Colour” takes place Thanksgiving weekend. Hours are Saturday, Oct.8, 3pm to 9pm and Sunday, Oct. 9, 12pm – 5pm. An opening reception will be held on Saturday from 7pm to 9pm during which time former piano students of Agnes will provide music. Besides artwork, published books of Agnes’s poetry will be on sale. Since the event is Thanksgiving weekend, a table of canning and baking will also be offered. Everyone is invited to enjoy the memory of Agnes through her art and add her art to your collection.
The event takes place at the Quail’s Nest Arts Centre at 5840 Airport Road in Oliver. Thanks go to the Oliver Community Arts Council for generously enabling this fundraiser to take place through their Contracted Service Agreement program.

Screaming success
Here is a photo of the RipOff artists with their creations just after the bell rang on Saturday signalling the end of this year’s challenge.
Although the iconic painting, “The Scream” by Edvard Munch is considered a depressing picture, the RipOffs did their best to liven it up. Each of the nine artists added an element from the previous nine years challenges: perhaps a dancing girl from Toulouse Lautrec, a cypress by Vincent van Gogh, or a tulip by Geoorgia O’Keeffe. In addition, the current challenge was to add an anachronism – often a reason for the “scream”. For example, a number of artists chose some form of industrialization or climate change in the background as their anachronism. Guest artist, Bethany Handfield with her encaustic talent was a delightful addition.
To celebrate the group’s 10th anniversary, a grand opening reception was held in “big blue”. Guests were surrounded by previous year’s RipOff challenge pieces. Shown together the impressive display gave kudos to the merits of the RipOff’s artistic achievements.
The artists wish to thank the Oliver Community Arts Council for their support in mounting this year’s special anniversary challenge.
Who knows what the group will conjure up for next year. Perhaps something acknowledging Canada’s 150th birthday….any suggestions?

Children hold their own art show and sale
Come support these young artists with your attendance and by purchasing some wonderful art. Proceeds from works sold will go to the Oliver Food Bank. What a great learning experience for these children. Be sure to enjoy some of Medici’s coffee and treats or a late lunch while you’re there!

View the artwork, vote for your favourites, purchase artwork, bid in the silent auction, and tour fascinating non-competitive displays such as the RipOff Artists American Gothic and demonstrations. Visit the arts council information booth. In the evening, nibble at the reception, listen to live entertainment, and be present for the announcement of category winners and “Best Interpretation of the Theme”.
The Sunday entrance is free with your paid entrance to the Festival of the Grape. The exhibits and sale continue, as does the silent auction. Meet the artists. View the category winners and the overall “Best in Show”.
Watch for cute little wine glass tags commemorating poster art from the last four art shows. They make great souvenirs as well as being handy to wear on your Festival of the Grape glass on Sunday.
Bring your chequebook because, in addition to the great art, arts council memberships, souvenirs and gift items on sale, you will definitely want to enter the silent auction!
The silent auction has 50 amazing items for bid! The auction continues the “Outside the Box” theme. Bid on dozens of tempting hand-painted boxes laden with various themed goods. Each box is filled with items such as “a night at the theatre”, “home preserves”, “vacation”, “outdoor living”, “games night”, “school days”, “kitchenware”, “gardening”, “coffee bar” , “tea for two” or “bath and beauty”, just to name a few. Each filled box makes an attractive gift or keep it for yourself and display it at home. Expect the bidding to be exciting right to the last minute!

FASS looking FAbulouSS
The Fall Art Show and Sale (FASS) is only two weeks away, and it’s shaping up to be something fahbulous darling! Be sure to catch all the excitement on Saturday October 1 and Sunday October 2 at the Oliver Community Centre. The theme this year is “Outside the Box”. Arts council members get first peek at the **NEW** wine charms (at left) on sale beginning Monday September 26 at the Arts Jam. Come out to the Quail’s Nest Arts Centre on Monday at 9:30 to buy your favourite or collect all five! These cute little laminated charms commemorate the last four FASS posters, and cost only $2 each. They are great for identifying your wine glass and those of your guests. Buy them now and “wear” them to the Festival of the Grape. (Come to think of it, they’d look pretty funky as earrings….) Also available all weekend at the FASS.
Just announced: the live entertainment for Saturday’s reception (7 – 9 p.m.) is… Jazz Out West. Not to be missed! Drop in at the art show from 3 p.m. – on to view the artwork, cast your vote for favourites in each category, and bid at the silent auction. Come back for the reception and schmooze with a great bunch of people. Wait for the announcement of the winners just before the 9 p.m. close.
On Sunday, the creativity continues: the show, sale, and silent auction go on AND there is the added bonus of a featured artist, Terry Irvine on site spinning and felting. Terry has a quirky humourous style, and she will love to demonstrate her craft and tell you all about it. Terry is also a member of the group featured as the non-competitive display …
The RipOff Artists will present their twisted take on “American Gothic” by Grant Wood. Come tour the display by this multimedia collective of artists. Not only do they “rip off” a great work of art and adapt it to their own medium, this year they also reimagine this iconic painting in the style of a different artist. Can’t imagine what that looks like. You gotta see it for yourself. You will not be disappointed. These folks are jaw-dropping good! On display all weekend long.

Shhh! Artists busy at work… How about YOU?
We know there are many artists out there already working on their submissions to the Fall Art Show and Sale. How about YOU? There’s still time to send in your entry form! The deadline for the form is September 9, 2011.
The theme is “Outside the Box”, and can be interpreted literally or figuratively. There may be an actual box somewhere in your creation, or perhaps the “box” is more of a metaphorical construct. Maybe what you create reflects how you are thinking outside the normal parameters, or outside your usual medium or perspective. The theme is meant to celebrate what is quirky, inventive, freed from constraint, or just plain different! What’s outside YOUR box?
For an entry form, visit Lauralee’s Treasure Cellar on Main Street or the Oliver Visitor Centre. Email OliverCAC @gmail.com to ask for a copy emailed to you or simply download the form here by clicking on the link. 2011 FASS Entry Form Print out on one sheet of 8x 11 using both sides of the page, and fold in half.

The Fall Art Show and Sale is the arts council’s largest event of the year, visited by hundreds of locals and tourists. Don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your artwork!
