Get your “wild” going

FASS 2016 Call for Entires

The Oliver Community Arts Councils Fall Art Show and Sale (FASS) will be “Going Wild” on October 1st and 2nd.  The show and sale runs jointly with the wildly popular Festival of the Grape at the Oliver Community Centre. The two-day event includes a competition in nine categories, public voting, exhibits and demos by featured artists, live entertainment, an evening reception, and a draw for a stocked wine fridge.

Visual artists in all media and of all ages are encouraged to enter with their interpretation of this theme. “Going Wild” could inspire an abstract expression of wild emotions: passion, anger, lust, or joyful abandon. The theme could reflect an artist’s choice of unusual media, going “wild and crazy” with new fibres, new digital techniques, new designs, new surfaces and applications. The theme could refer to the artist’s choice of subject matter: psychological turmoil, political ideology, liberation, anarchy, or a “back-to-the-land” philosophy. “Going Wild” might also inspire a nature lover to submit a work featuring flora or fauna, such as an overgrown garden, an exotic animal, or a wilderness adventure. We hope this theme gives you great scope as you decide what you will enter this year. What is WILD for you?

Categories include photography, fibre arts, oils, acrylics, watercolours, three-dimensional, and other media (encaustic, pen and ink, mixed media, etc), Two categories for youth, emerging artists and budding artists, invite entries in any visual medium. Awards are given in each category, as well as an overall “Best Interpretation of the Theme” (Best in Show).

Entry forms must be received by Friday September 9, 2016Artwork need not be completed by that date. We just need to know what it is you plan to enter! Artwork is delivered to the venue on the morning of the show, Saturday October 1. This gives artists up to three extra weeks to complete their piece.

Individual membership in the Oliver Community Arts Council ($15) is not required but does reduce the entry fee for Adult submissions, as well as providing benefits through the year. Emerging artist submissions are a $10 fee. For budding artists the entry fee is waived. If you became a member of the arts council as part of last year’s FASS, your membership is good through to the end of 2016. If you purchase a membership as part of this year`s FASS, that membership is good through 2017 (and the 2017 FASS). That means you are good for two shows in one! If you are uncertain of your current membership status, please contact us.

Kurt Hutterli exhibits unusual finds

Kurt Hutterli | The Museum of Unknown Civilizations

Kurt HutterliThe Museum of Unknown Civilizations is a project started in Oliver BC by transplanted artist Kurt Hutterli (left).  The museum follows a childhood dream of the artist to explore the unknown in objects encountered in museums as a child.  Years later, myth comes to life through recycled materials creating mysterious and invented artifacts.  These works are designed to make the viewer ask questions ordinarily overlooked, to prod the viewer to seek answers to the unknown.  The work seems to probe an uncertain, uncomfortable future.

IMG_3350Kurt Hutterli emigrated to Oliver, Canada with his wife Marianne in 1996 from Bern, Switzerland leaving behind a stable and successful career as a school teacher, artist and writer. Kurt is a multi-faceted artist; a builder, a painter and a writer, often combining some combination of his tool box when working on a new piece of work, all traits of a Dada artist, which Hutterli is foremost. As a form of inspiration, it is important to note Dada was an artistic and literary movement that began in Switzerland as a reaction to the First World War and the ridiculous state of affairs by creating equally nonsensical work as a form of protest.  While art forms come and go, Dada appears to be an art form with no end in sight, with Dada artists like Hutterli using its form to create discourse on subjects that are important to the time.

This exhibition is Kurt’s second in Penticton.  In 2003 the (then) Art Gallery of the South Okanagan hosted ‘A Colourful Meeting”, an eclectic collection of brightly coloured display made from found and made objects. The exhibition was a precursor to this exhibition in ways.  It was around this time that Kurt began a new project entitled The Museum of Unknown Civilizations.  This exhibition will showcase Hutterli’s latest installment of this ongoing project and fifteen years of work.

MUC CATALOGUEOn behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and friends of the Penticton Art Gallery, I would like to thank Mr. Urs V. Strausak, Consul General of Switzerland, for his financial support enabling the publication of a catalogue to document this exhibition.

Wineries give to “cool” event

As the Fall Art Show and Sale approaches, so does one of the most exciting features of the two-day exhibition and sale: the stocked wine cooler! This attraction has been so popular with visitors, it’s back again for a third year. Come to the show and sale either Saturday October 1 (free admission) or Sunday October 2 (Festival of the Grape admission), make a donation  at the entrance, and you may walk away with a sampling of great Okanagan wines and a cool place to store them!

We are very grateful to these local wineries for donating their favourite reds and whites to the FASS. We’re far from finished stocking the fridge, so watch this space to see how the wine list GROWS!

And by the way, one of the perks of asking for donations at wineries is the tasting on site. We can vouch for all these wines as fun, flavourful, feisty, and FASS-tastic! Why not pay them a visit by clicking on the links.

2016 FASS mini - Going Wild

A great “thing” this weekend

Marion and TaraMarion Trimble and Tara Hovanes are shown ready to exhibit their art, Thursday to Saturday on Main Street.

This is the first time the artists have shown together and the first time to have a show on this scale not connected with a group. Although their styles are completely different they share a love of art and an appreciation of each other’s talent. Both are members of the Oliver Arts Council, the Sagebrusher Art Club and the RipOff Artists and both have won awards in their categories at the Oliver’s Fall Art Show and Sale. In 2013 and 2014, the two organized “Art Without Borders”, very successful exchange visits with artists from Oliver’s sister city, Lake Chelan. Over time the two have crossed paths, immersed in art and become good friends.

“It’s a Tara & Marion thing” is open daily 10 am to 4 pm from Thursday August 11 through Saturday, August 13 at 6220 Main Street. Take the doorway between The Oliver Shoe Store and the Artisan Bakery to the back of the building. Here you’ll find Tara and Marion welcoming you to view and purchase some of their fine art.TaraMarion Thing

Naomi Shore and Lindsay Pratt are TWIN PEAKS.

“Twin Peaks is one of the most interesting and dynamic faces of British Columbia folk, and Canadian music in general.”

Rich harmonies, a piano, a guitar, two ukuleles and unlimited wit are at the heart of Twin Peaks – a duo that embraces roots music with undertones of country and contemporary blues. Naomi Shore and Lindsay Pratt’s onstage chemistry is totally infectious. They combine heavenly harmonies with banter that can border on the hellishly humorous. Born and raised in northern BC in Fort St. John, their music reflects small town wisdom with lively humour and songs that immediately capture an audience.

“They take traditional country and pass it through a modern indie folk filter, coming up with a sound that really is all their own.”

Tickets are $25 in advance.  Come see them in an intimate performance while you can at Medici’s Gelateria and Coffee House, 522 Fairview Road in Oliver. 250-498-2228

Doors open at 6:30, Twin Peaks are on at 7:30. Before posters have even gone to press, 25% of tickets were already sold, so act fast!
