The senior art class at SOSS in combination with a variety of other classes is hosting an Art show and student work showcase on June 14 from 6-7:30 in the schools library and cafeteria. There will be student performances throughout the evening and lots of goodies made by the cafeteria program. During the evening we will also be unveiling our school’s new mural made in combination between First Peoples Art 10 and Senior Woodwork.
This is our first year using this new format and space for the year end show so we are really excited and hope you will be able to join us!
This event is free to the public, but donations for the SOSS Student art club will be accepted.

Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and come over to the community park on Thursday, June 14th at 7 pm. You will find lots of your friends and neighbours out to enjoy an evening of jazz for the best of causes. Oliver’s Grandmothers for Africa are presenting Penticton’s Thursday Night Jazz Band.
The idea of the Thursday Night Jazz Band is unique, brilliant and quite different from a formal concert. Talented and generous, a substantial group of jazz musicians from the South Okanagan get together in various combinations to perform. They have to practice and most have day jobs. So Thursday nights, informal and fun, are practice time and why not practice in front of an audience and help local charities raise money ?
The local Grandmothers for Africa group was recently inspired when a Kamloops grandmother, Mary Baker, returned from visiting Uganda and Tanzania. She talked about the 17 million African kids who have lost one or both of their parents in the AIDS pandemic. 40 to 60% of those kids are living with their grandmothers and those indomitable Grandmothers, with our help, manage to feed, clothe, and educate them. They give them the love and support they need, engage in AIDS education and take part in income generating projects. By working together, grandmothers here and in Africa are part of a massive process of reaching out to help isolated and fractured families become vibrant and hopeful again.
Mary mentioned to us that in the gatherings in Sub-Saharan Africa, music and dance were central and both joy and sorrow were connected and expressed. It seems fitting that a night of free flowing jazz right here in Oliver should be a part of showing our solidarity with our counterparts abroad. Sometimes plaintiff, often joyful, the notes of the Thursday Night Jazz Band can touch the spirit. Be careful! You may find yourself dancing on the grass and throwing more money than you planned into the donation jars!!

A review of the past year and a preview of the coming season will be provided to members and other interested people at the society’s annual general meeting on June 14. The evening begins with a potluck dinner at 6 pm at Big Blue followed by the meeting at 7 pm. Elections for the executive and board members will take place at the meeting.

The curtain has barely come down on SOAP Theatre’s last production of the 2017-18 season but already planning is in full gear for the 2018-19 season.
The award winning community theatre group successfully staged three productions this past season and it plans to continue with that ambitious schedule next year. The season was capped off with Outside Mullingar winning several awards at Theatre B.C.’s recent Okanagan Zone drama festival in Vernon, including Jennifer MacNeil as Best Actress, Director Tom Szalay for Best Newcomer and Brian Hesje for Best Sound Design. The adjudicator also had praise for Jeff Smith in the best actor category and gave a shout out to Tom Szalay in the best set design category.
First up for the next season is a dramatic production with a twist. Rights have been obtained for It’s A Wonderful Life- A Live Radio Broadcast, adapted by Joe Landry. Frank Venables Theatre will be transformed into a radio broadcast studio as this beloved holiday classic comes to captivating life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve. Part of the fun will be having the “foley artist” or sound effects technician, on stage, creating the necessary effects rather than relying on recordings played from the sound booth. The play will run the first week of December.
Planned for late January and early February is Beyond Therapy, by Christopher Durang and directed by Nathan Linders. When upscale New York’s two least license-worthy therapists inadvertently send two patients on a collision course, the unintended consequences of the worst blind date ever disrupt the lives of everyone involved, even the therapists themselves. Can these two therapists, their patients, and two hapless bystanders overcome their hang-ups, or are they Beyond Therapy?
Lawrence & Holloman, to be directed by Trevor Leigh, is the dark and twisted story of a cynical and suicidal accounting clerk (Holloman) who gets taken under the wing of a happy-go-lucky, ever-optimistic suit salesman (Lawrence). Lawrence the optimist tries to teach Holloman the pessimist how to live happily and remain positive, until his own good luck starts to turn. Lawrence’s fiancee dumps him, his car is demolished, his dog goes missing, he loses his job, and his apartment is burned to the ground… and that’s just the beginning! Is happiness determined by our outlook on life? Or can our destiny be changed by another? The play is written by Vancouver’s own two-time Governor General Award-winning writer Morris Panych and will be SOAP Theatre’s entry in the 2019 Okanagan Drama Festival. It will be staged in late April and early May.
Auditions for Beyond Therapy and Lawrence and Holloman will take place on June 9 and 10 from 1 to 4 pm at Big Blue, the large metal building at the Quail’s Nest Arts Centre on Airport Road in Oliver. An audition call for It’s A Wonderful Life – A Live Radio Broadcast will go out in September.
Beyond Therapy is seeking four men and two women. Bruce is a lawyer in his mid to late thirties; Prudence is mid to late thirties; Bob is a pharmacist in his mid to late thirties; Stuart, a therapist, can range from early forties to early fifties; Charlotte is a therapist and can range from late thirties to late forties; Andrew is a waiter, preferably younger than Bob and Bruce and ideally mid

Director Leigh will be looking for two males, ages 25-60, for the lead roles. The actors will have lots of stage time and will be challenged in their roles. Also sought are two females, ages 20 to 80.
The play will have a live original sound score and sound effects. One or both of the female actors should be able to play piano or guitar or violin or cello or the vibes or any interesting instrument. One and/or both will also be asked to contribute live sound effects on stage and will be required to sing.
Leigh is looking for creative souls who love music and theatre and are interested in creating original compositions and sound effects. If you have any original music or recordings please submit a sample to the director at ftleigh@mac.com.

May Long Weekend is coming up, which marks one year since we opened our Patio! So we figure it’s worth a celebration, with another May Long Patio Party, Friday – Monday (May 18-21). We’ll have bouncy castles and food trucks on-site all weekend, drink specials and music entertainment. Friday will kick off with Thai On The Fly serving
delicious dinners, and a Funky 70’s Dance Party with DJ Master Blaster. We’re still on
the hunt for a band for Saturday night and a food truck for Saturday-Monday, but either way, we’ll have a wine feature from Oliver’s new La Casa Bianca Winery, and bouncey castles and games from the winery family’s other company: Fun4Life.

Oliver’s arts community is ready to celebrate spring. The Wine Capital Art Walk blossoms with vibrant colours in the 6200 block of Main Street (between School and Bank Avenues) from Monday May 7 to Thursday May 10. Seasoned artists in the full bloom of their talent and some budding artists from Oliver’s schools will display and demonstrate their talents in many media.
Art walk events begin on Monday May 7, with ten artists painting wine barrels into colourful life for the silent auction. They will paint daily between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Monday to Thursday in the lot between Amore’s Pizza and OK Photo Lab. The participants span the artistic spectrum from SOSS graffiti artist Connor Kitt, to seasoned award-winners Marion Trimble, Lorraine Horn, and Katherine MacNeill. Two arts groups, The Painted Chair and CreateAbility, will feature the talents of differently-abled adults on their wine barrels. Visitors to the downtown are invited to stroll by to view the barrels in progress and place their silent bids. These one-of-a-kind barrels will make attractive show pieces for gardens, patios, and homes, and will be auctioned off at the conclusion of Thursday’s Art Walk. Bids start at $150. The sales benefit both the artists and arts organizers.
All week, shoppers will notice colourful footprints appearing on the sidewalks down the 6200 block. These identify the fifteen businesses that will host artists during the evening art walk on Thursday May 10 from 6 – 8 p.m. Drop in to any participating store during the week and pick up an Art Walk “passport”, which doubles as a draw ticket at Thursday’s event. Passports will also be available at the wine barrel auction site, and during the art walk itself.
The art celebration continues in earnest on Thursday May 10 at 6 p.m. Artwork in many media — photography, jewelry, wood carving, pottery, metalwork, fibre arts, acrylics, and digital art – will be on display and for sale at each participating business. Chat with some fascinating artists, and do a little shopping. Pick up a passport, have it stamped at each store listed, and enter the completed passport into the draw for a wine-and-dine gift basket.
The wine barrel auction heats up during the Thursday evening art walk, with silent bids accepted until 7:45 p.m.
To stimulate the palate, wine tastings will be available at OK Photo Lab and Baguette & Brioche Bakery, with beer and cider on offer at Beyond Bliss Esthetics. To satisfy more serious appetites, Gecko’s Grill, Amore’s Pizza, and Medici’s Gelateria will be open during the evening.
Performance art takes centre stage with Rebel Luv pumping out the pop tunes right on the sidewalk. Mikie Spillet will be sure to get the crowd singing and dancing to her vocals. Professional dancer Andrea Furlan will perform at Pur Zen, with other surprise performances in the works throughout the evening.
Arty Smarty teacher, Leza Macdonald, and Oliver Kiwanis will keep small hands busy during Thursday’s walk with some make-and-take art activities for children.
An information table in the centre of the block will be the place to grab an Art Walk passport, enter draws for several more prizes on display, and learn about upcoming arts events.
After the art walk winds down at 8 p.m., a Wine’d Up Party at Medici’s Gelateria keeps the excitement going for the next hour. Enjoy a sweet treat, and view the exhibit of artwork by the Oliver Sagebrushers. All the draw winners will be presented with their prizes. One lucky Art Walk passport holder will win a luxurious gift basket. The best bidders on the wine barrel auction can roll on home with their prizes.
