Medici’s Grande Finale: Folk Road Show Sept. 8

This incredible band blew the roof off Summer 2016 with an amazing performance! Each one an artist and entertainer in their own right, they are such a super talented force when banded together. See them at Medici’s Friday, September 8.

Folk Road Show make your living room feel like a theatre and a theatre feel like your living room. As the name suggests, the international group is anything but a conventional band and more a traveling folk variety show that could have been put together by PT Barnum and Bob Dylan, with Jack Kerouac consulting.

Five singer-songwriters from three continents: Dominique Fricot (CAN), Benjamin James Caldwell (AUS), Olaf Caarls (NL), Pieter van Vliet (NL), and Nick Petrowich (CAN), they’ve toured both Canada and Europe extensively taking roots-americana stylings of The Band and CSNY and painting it with the youthful spirit of Fleet Foxes and Beirut. Folk Road Show constantly rotates lead singers, showcasing each member while swapping instruments and supporting with soothing five-part harmonies.

The band has toured Canada twice and Europe three times. FRS has played over 200 shows at venues and festivals across both continents including Arts Wells (2015-16), Tiny Lights Festival (2015), Golden Sound Festival (2016), and Rootstock, AB (2016), and the Life I Live (Den Haag, NL), Sniester Festival (Den Haag, NL), Oerol Festival (Terschelling, NL) and Melodica Festival (Groningen, NL) . of the same name to European radio and media streams April 14, 2017 and on and on.

This is our huge Summer Grande Finale….Tickets go for $25 and we’ve already got a huge reserve list before printing. Seating is assigned. Doors open at 6:30 and The Folk Road Show takes the stage at 7:30

Calling all artists, say quail

Entry forms for the upcoming Fall Art Show & Sale (FASS) are already flying in from local artists. The Oliver Community Arts Council mounts the popular event on Saturday September 30 and Sunday October 1.  The show and sale runs jointly with the Festival of the Grape at the Oliver Community Centre, making it one of the highest-traffic events of the year. The two-day arts event includes a competition in nine categories, public voting, sales, exhibits and demos by featured artists, live entertainment, a dessert reception, and a draw for a stocked wine fridge.

Visual artists in all media and of all ages are encouraged to enter.  As has been our tradition for every second year, there is no theme in 2017, simply “Artist’s Choice”, giving great scope for entering one’s best work.

Categories are Photography, Fibre Arts, Oils, Acrylics, Watercolours, Three-Dimensional, and Mixed/Other Media. Two categories for youth, Emerging Artists and Budding Artists, invite entries in any visual medium. Awards are given in each category, as well as an overall “Best in Show”.

FASS 2017 Entry Form

FASS 2017 Terms and Guidelines

Entry forms must be received by Friday September 8, 2017. NEW Early bird draw! Submit your form and fee before that date for a chance to win back your entry fee! Artwork need not be completed by that date. Artwork is delivered to the venue on the morning of the show, Saturday September 30. This gives artists up to three extra weeks to complete their piece(s).

This year, quail trophies are mounted on extra-special bases designed by Russell Moore. The bases are created from salvaged wood from the old Venables Theatre, before it was destroyed by fire in 2011. The wood is left unfinished for artists to either enjoy as an historic artifact or to finish to their personal liking. Awards are given for first second and third place in all categories but the young Budding Artists, who receive gift cards. For the first time, honorable mentions will also be awarded where there is special merit.

Membership in the Oliver Community Arts Council is not required to enter but does reduce the entry fee for Adult submissions. Emerging Artist (teen) submissions are $10. For Budding Artists (12 and under) the fee is waived.

Membership Form 2017

Entry forms are always available here: FASS Forms. A FASS Artist FAQ and definitions of the art categories are also posted.

Hard copies of the entry forms are available at the Oliver Visitors Information Centre (historic CPR Station) and the Quail’s Nest Arts Centre.
